Five wizards were sent to Middle-earth to serve as advisors to oppose evil.
A wizard's appearance resembles that of an old man, although they age slowly and are actually physically vigorous.
Wizards possess great powers of body and mind.
They use staffs as a means to conduct their power and will.
Each Wizard has his own color and grade. White being the highest in their order and Grey the next level in power and wisdom.
Wizards are forbidden to dominate those in Middle-earth and match Sauron's power. However, Saruman disobeys this rule and joined forces with evil.
Hobbits
Hobbit height ranges between two and four feet tall.
Hobbits have pointed ears.
They have oversized feet and never wear shoes.
Hobbits have curly hair.
Hobbits love to eat (six substantial meals a day), brew ale, smoke pipe weed, and garden in the Shire where they live.
Hobbits discourage excessive or adventurous behavior which is why many were surprised that Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin went on such an adventure as told in The Lord of the Rings.
Hobbits are generally very provincial in nature and are typically untrusting of the outside world.
Some Hobbits have lived as long as 130 years, and their average life span is 100 years. 33 years old, the age of Frodo Baggins, is considered "Coming of Age" to adulthood.
Hobbits are also called "Little Folk," "Little People," or "Halflings."
Hobbits speak a dialect of the common speech, Westron.
Humans
Men are mortal and bred more quickly than any other race besides the evil Orcs.
Men are subject to age, disease and the rough elements of Middle-earth.
Men are not perceptive to the minds of others, can not see into the future and are less skilled in lore and crafts than other races. They are considered weak compared to the immortal Elves.
Men are a very diverse race. Physically they come in all shapes and sizes and inhabit many different parts of Middle-earth.
Hobbits call Men "Big Folk" or "Big People."
Throughout the ages of Middle-earth, Men rose and eventually became the dominant race.
Aragorn is the first man to join the Hobbits on their journey to return The Ring of Power to the fires of Mount Doom.
Dwarves
Dwarves are four to five feet tall with the male Dwarves long-bearded.
Dwarves are a stocky, strong and proud race with a resistance to fire and hardier than any other.
Dwarves are great miners, craftsmen and work wonders with stone, metals, and jewels.
In war, Dwarves use an axe as their weapon of choice.
Elves
Elves are immortal and do not physically age.
Elves do not grow weak as they age, only wiser and more beautiful.
Elves have more beauty than any creatures on earth, but also possess the most extreme happiness and sorrow.
Ents
Ents are called the Shepherds of the Trees.
Treelike in appearance, they primarily reside in Fangorn Forest.
Though all resemble trees, Ents do come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.
They have slow musical voices and their native language of Entish.
Despite their different ages, they all have the same slow, steady, thoughtful expression.
An Ent Moot is when the Ents gather together to discuss important matters.
